Meet Susan:
Every human being has the fundamental right to express their thoughts, feelings, and autonomy. With a rich background in Special Education and School Counseling, my career has always been centered around supporting and advocating for individuals who learn and experience the world differently. Today, as a practitioner registered with the International Association of Spelling to Communicate (I-ASC), I have dedicated my life’s work to helping individuals with apraxia and other sensory-motor differences unlock their true voices.
Through my years in education, I have seen firsthand that a person’s inability to speak does not diminish their value, their intelligence, or their deep understanding of the world around them. Often, the barrier is simply a motor disconnect between the brain and the body, not a reflection of cognitive capacity.
My approach is anchored in presumed competence. By treating communication as a teachable motor skill, I help my students bypass unreliable speech pathways and develop the purposeful motor movements needed to spell on a letterboard.
